Before Yahiko came to the Kamiya Dojo, he was trying to pay off his "debt" to a bunch of bandits by stealing from others. Kenshin, together with Kaoru, saved him and made him realize that he was just being used. After that, Kaoru decided to adopt him and thought him the Kamiya Katsushin Ryu.

Yahiko is like the annoying kid brother that Kaoru never had. He is disrespectful and almost always never obeys her. Originally, he really likes to learn Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu but Kenshin convinced him to learn from Kaoru. So, he settled to learn the Kamiya Kasshin Ryu.
