He was a member of the government group Sekihoutai-gumi. However, the government betrayed and secretly killed them. He was one of the survivors in the massacre. His hatred for the government spilled over Kenshin. Both of them fought and he lost to Kenshin who lead him to the peace-loving path.

After a rude awakening by Saito that he was Kenshin's weak link, he tried hard to prove that statement false. One of his great accomplishments was learning the Futae No Kawami (double limit) within a week from a monk he met along his travels.

Because of his hair style, he was given the name "Chicken Head" by Chou. His habit of chewing fish bones also earned him the name "Fish Lips".
