His real name is Shinta but Hiko Seijuro changed it when he adopted him. Hiko said that it was not a name for a swordsman so he changed it to Kenshin. It means "heart of sword".

He was known as Hitokiri Battosai during Bakamatsu. After fulfilling his duties as an assassin, he became a wanderer and swore never to kill again. The only trace that was left of his assassin days was the cross scar on his left cheek. Later, he was taken in by Kaoru Kamiya and he finally felt like he had a family.
